This is a quick video I put together about the FPV flights I did last Friday in the polders of Tielrode.

Yesterday I did my first real FPV flights with my Bixler! It was a blast!

A few things I learned:

  • People are right when they say the Gopro isn’t good for FPV. It’s really bad in low light conditions and often the ground is blacked out.
  • These cloverleaf and skew planar wheel antenna’s are great! I never had video interference at all, granted I didn’t go that far in FPV terms…
  • My COG (center of gravity) is way off with all the FPV gear on. I need to trim some weight of the plane. I will have to find a way to remove the gopro case and still be able to mount it.
  • Either I buy a new FPV camera which handles dark better, or I fly when the sun is higher 🙂

Here’s the video. Not sure what happened at the end. Probably not enough speed for the turn. It landed in knee-high grass, so no damage.

First flight with GoPro Hero HD – UNCUT

Today I did some flights with my quadcopter, for the first time with a GoPro Hero HD (720p; 60 fps). It’s mounted with a handlebar mount.
This is the uncut version. A nicer one will be uploaded later.

The altitude shots are as high as I dare to go without FPV live feed. At that height things can go wrong quickly.

The buildings and structures are from an archery club. When the quadcopter is at it’s highest point at 3:24 you can see the river Scheldt. According to Google Earth, the river is about 700 meters as the crow flies.

Around 6:30 I crash, that’s because I lost line of sight behind the little white structure.
